He died right before the eyes of the world,\u201d Jones told Native Sun News Today.<\/p>\n<p>The May 30 Walk\/Stand Up for George event, which began at the Band Shell in Memorial Park, up to 5th Street then down to Omaha Street was organized by Jodi Prue, Madison Castaneda, Shaylene Cordero, and Becca Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people of all nationalities showed up in support, carrying signs that read: \u201cJustice for George\u201d \u201cStop killing us\u201d and \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d as they chanted \u201cNo justice, no peace. Say his name, George Floyd\u201d and \u201cGeorge Floyd, I can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is so heartbreaking,\u201d said Prue. \u201cI recently lost my sister and father and that broke my heart, but watching that video broke my heart equally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not trying to bring down our city, we just want change,\u201d said Prue in light of riots in other cities.<\/p>\n<p>After the walk, a smaller group of protestors left the walk and demonstrated outside of the Public Safety Building. One man was arrested during the smaller group\u2019s demonstration when he was disrupting traffic on New York Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSelwyn Jones was all over Memorial Park making sure all was going well and peaceful,\u201d said Shirley Garnette, Oglala Lakota, who marched alongside Jones and his son Shawn York. \u201cHe seemed to really like us Indian people because we are really cool. We were calm and respectful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones who lived in Rapid City as a small business owner for over 20 years and now owns a motel in Gettysburg, along with his wife Joey, said, \u201cGeorge was the biggest gentle giant ever. He was a great athlete, and always had a smile on his face, and a good heart. All of this feels like you\u2019re waiting for someone to slap you, and say \u2018wake up!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones, who is originally from North Carolina, recalls his youth and the racism he experienced in the South. He says to look up pictures of lynchings and to take note of how white people pose in the photos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see the look in his eye when his knee was on my nephew\u2019s neck?\u201d Jones asked. \u201cIt looked like he was holding a trophy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones said he declined to go to Minneapolis because of the violence that has erupted in the aftermath of his nephew\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe going to Minneapolis with those people raging the way they are, does not do my cause any good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been dealing with this situation for 54 years,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery time you see an injustice happen to a person of color, it breaks your heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the Rapid City Journal Jones \u201cpointed to news reports that state Chauvin has had a history of use-of-force incidents over his career, including involvement as one of five officers placed on leave after they shot and wounded an indigenous man in 2011.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones said he heard about his nephew\u2019s death when his sister called him and told to watch the video that was posted by 17-year-old Darnella Frazier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister calls me and tells me my nephew passed away,\u201d Jones said. \u201cDid you watch the video and hear him calling for my sister, \u2018momma, momma.\u2019 He realized that the ghost was coming.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nativesunnews.today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ERNIE-Selwyn-Jones-George-Floyds-Uncle-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19778 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/unitedresourceconnection.org\/cannon-ball-nd-58528\/files\/2020\/06\/ERNIE-Selwyn-Jones-George-Floyds-Uncle-300x200-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we get to go to Houston, Texas and we get to see my big pretty nephew lowered down into the ground, because somebody decided,\u201d he paused then added, \u201cLet me say this, it wasn\u2019t by a black man, it wasn\u2019t by a yellow man, it wasn\u2019t by a green man, it was once again by a white man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Jones, Floyd\u2019s body will be flown to Houston where the family has ordered their own autopsy, which he said will show there were three Taser marks on his body.<\/p>\n<p>Jones said that when his four-year-old son saw the video he said, \u201cDad, look what they done to Uncle Perry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The uncle of the man whose death has prompted an uprising across the Nation said that what happened on Memorial Day 2020, \u201cHas thrown us back 100 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this doesn\u2019t make a change because this is going out to more people than anything that\u2019s ever been in this category, if we can\u2019t make a change with this one, change is never going to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe God chose him to be this person, this person to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender issued a statement on May 31, \u201cI support peaceful demonstrations and in my experience, Rapid City has gone to great lengths to accommodate, even assist groups wishing to march. The First amendment is a sacred amendment to our Constitution and is something that helps define a free nation. The City of Rapid City will not stand idly by when lives or property are in danger. We will accommodate, even assist in demonstrations, but we will not condone behavior that threatens the public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of Floyd\u2019s death, murder and manslaughter charges have been filed against Derek Chauvin, the officer who prosecutors say held his knee on Floyd\u2019s neck for nearly nine minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Chauvin and the other three officers at the scene have been fired.
