RAPID CITY \u2013\u00a0 A walk to promote awareness on domestic violence and the devasting effects it has on children and families will take place on Oct. 9.<\/p>\n

Native Women\u2019s Society of the Great Plains has coordinated the walk offering beautifully designed t-shirts, water, and snacks to those who participate.<\/p>\n

Registration will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday morning, at the Memorial Park Bandshell, south of the east entry doors to the Civic Center. Signs will be available for walkers, but participants are encouraged to bring their own signs.\u00a0 Kevin Killer, President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and LeToy Lunderman, a strong advocate for survivors will be guest speakers at the event.<\/p>\n

\u2018We Are the Strength of Our Grandmother\u2019s Prayers\u2019 is the wording on the t-shirts.<\/p>\n

Carmen O\u2019Leary, Director of Native Women\u2019s Society of the Great Plains, encourages participants to join the walk as October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month nationwide. She said not only on this month, but always, people need to raise awareness and support survivors of family violence. \u201cWhen we heal ourselves, we heal our children,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Violence in the home, especially constant violence, causes health issues to survivors, including children. It can eventually lead to chronic pain, heart and lung issues, diabetes and other health problems. The trauma eventually causes these health issues when there is not enough healing.<\/p>\n

Native Women\u2019s Society of the Great Plains is a tribal coalition of tribal organizations on the Northern Plains that work together to end domestic and sexual violence in their communities, promoting advocacy to survivors to keep them safe and help them heal.<\/p>\n
