During the 2021 Indian National Finals Rodeo (INFR) held Oct 19 to 22nd in Las Vegas. Tatum Ward, 23 year old Cheyenne River Sioux cowgirl who hails from White Horse, South Dakota realized the dream of every Indian barrel racer \u2013 she \u201cwon the gold\u201d.
\nTatum comes from a well-known rodeo family on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation \u2013 her father Teeter, bronc rider, Uncle Todd, steer wrestler and Cousin Bill, bull rider who were all fierce competitors. She credits them and her whole extended family, especially her little sister, with being a \u201cwonderful support system behind me\u201d.
\nHorseback since she was two years old, Tatum, started competed in barrel racing beginning at age twelve, a tough competitor. Some highlights of her career include: 2012 Jr. INFR champion; 2015 Great Plains Rodeo Association champion and qualifying for the South Dakota High School Finals.
\nThis year several challenges \u201cstood against\u201d her, Tatum said. She suffered a fractured ankle, concussion and pneumonia and her horse was also injured. The week before the finals, she was still in the grip of pneumonia, yet determined to compete, the goal \u201cnot to fall off her horse.\u201d
\nTatum has been riding an eight year old mare \u201cCC\u201d for four years, one she finished herself. The 2021 INFR was the first \u2018big\u201d show for that horse, but Tatum reports that \u201cCC\u201d took care of her. \u201cShe covered up for my mistakes\u201d the new champion remarked.
\nWard is also a breakaway roper and future goals are to seek a championship in that event, hoping to become an \u201cAll-Around\u201d champion, a very difficult feat.
\nWhen not on the rodeo trail, she works as a dental assistant at the Cheyenne River Sioux Dental Clinic at Eagle Butte. She makes her home on the family ranch outside of White Horse, South Dakota.
\nOther 2021 INFR champions include: Bareback \u2013 Jayco Roper: ( Oklahoma); Steer Wrestling (Nolan Conway (Blackfeet) ; Break Away \u2013 Danielle Lowman (Arizona); Saddle Bronc \u2013 Cole Elshere (North Dakota); Tie Down \u2013 Dontre\u2019 Goff (Oklahoma); Team Roping \u2013 Erich Rogers and Aaron Tsinigine
\nBull Riding \u2013 Cannon Cravens All Around Cowboy \u2013 Erich Rogers ( AZ); All Around Cowgirl \u2013 Kassidy Dennison (Navajo) and All-around cowboy AarronTsingine (Navaho).
\nJunior Champions are: Barrels \u2013 Taliyah Crook \u2013 Kingman, AZ; Jr. Breakaway \u2013 Wawa Ben \u2013 Peridot, AZ; Jr. Bulls \u2013 Tahj Wells \u2013 Browning, MT; Sr Team Roping \u2013 John Boyd \/ Howard Begay and Sr Breakaway \u2013 Troy Crawler \u2013 M \u2013 Morley, Alberta, Canada.
