WASHINGTON \u2013 Today, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai\u2018i), chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, released the following statement on President Joe Biden\u2019s nomination of Roselyn Tso to serve as Director of the Indian Health Service (IHS). If confirmed, Tso would lead IHS, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services that delivers health services to approximately 2.6 million American Indians and Alaska Natives across the nation through a comprehensive federal, Tribal, and urban Indian health care system.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Indian Health Service Director plays a critical role in raising the health status of Native peoples and upholding the federal government\u2019s trust responsibility to Native communities,\u201d said Chairman Schatz.<\/strong> \u201cI am committed to seeking Indian Country\u2019s input on Ms. Tso\u2019s nomination as the Committee carefully considers her qualifications.\u201d<\/p>\n

A citizen of the Navajo Nation, Roselyn Tso is currently the Director of the Navajo Area of IHS, and previously held the position of Director of the Office of Direct Services and Contracting Tribes at IHS. Tso began working for IHS in 1984, and prior to working with the Navajo Area, she spent years working in the Portland Area, which included roles such as the Portland Area Planning and Statistical Officer, Equal Employment Officer, Special Assistant to the Area Director, and as Director of the Office of Tribal and Service Unit Operations. As Director for Tribal and Service Unit Operations, she was responsible for implementing the Indian Self-Determination and Education Act, working directly with Tribes and direct service Tribes.<\/p>\n
