After an uproar over a performance by a cheer group at the park this week,\u00a0Walt Disney World<\/a><\/u>\u00a0issued a statement today addressing racist stereotypes about native Americans in the drill team\u2019s routine. Video shows the The Port Neches-Groves \u201cIndianettes\u201d High School drill team repeating the words, \u201cscalp \u2018em Indians, scalp \u2018em,\u201d among other things.<\/p>\n

Disney spokesperson Jacquee Wahler said in the statement, \u201cThe live performance in our park did not reflect our core values, and we regret it took place. It was not consistent with the audition tape the school provided and we have immediately put measures in place so this is not repeated.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s been a\u00a0bad stretch<\/a><\/u>\u00a0for Disney Parks\u2019 self-declared \u201cInclusion<\/a><\/u>\u201d\u00a0initiative<\/a><\/u>\u00a0got a little worse this week as video surfaced online of a high school cheer team from Texas performing a routine at Walt Disney World that contained racist stereotypes of Native Americans.<\/p>\n

The Port Neches-Groves \u201cIndianettes\u201d High School drill team wore fringed costumes and did dance moves reminiscent of those seen in\u00a0Native American<\/a><\/u>\u00a0cultures on the park\u2019s Main Street this week. Their cheer included the words \u201cscalp \u2019em Indians, scalp \u2019em\u201d repeated as they performed.<\/p>\n

Tara Houska, an Ojibwe tribal attorney and former advisor to Sen. Bernie Sanders, tweeted the video and wrote: \u201cCuz a bunch of kids in fringe chanting \u201cscalp \u2018em Indians, scalp \u2018em\u201d is honor, right? And any Natives who attend @pngisd should prolly just accept their classmates dehumanizing them cuz \u201ctradition\u201d, right? Shame on @DisneyParks hosting this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Houska ended with, \u201cNostalgic racism is RACISM.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly Lynne D\u2019Angelo, a writer on TNT\u2019s\u00a0Miracle Workers<\/em>\u00a0retweeted Houska\u2019s post and added, \u201c99% percent of the people sharing their outrage about this are Native people. Can\u2019t you see that\u2019s the problem too?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy must WE be the ones to speak up of all the blatant racism against us? Of our constant mistreatment? Why must we fight, tooth and nail, for you to understand we are human and alive and thriving too?<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause the thing is: our ways were right and always have been. We know how to make bounty on this earth. How to live EASILY. Our relational practices with each other and the earth are a FUNDAMENTAL CORE to a healthy and harmonious human experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cStop this and grow up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some online noted that the performance by the Port Neches-Groves cheer team did not include one thing: Their headdresses, which they have worn in past performances. Such a costume is considered cultural appropriation,\u00a0according to<\/a><\/u>\u00a0the Jim Crow Museum and Ferris State University. Some speculated that their absence was evidence of Disney assessing the performance before it hit Main Street. If so, they wondered, how did the rest of the routine get OK\u2019d?<\/p>\n

Last year, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D\u2019Amaro announced that Disney properties were making changes and \u201ccreating a place where everyone is welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

D\u2019Amaro said the company had, starting in 2019, engaged employees and come up with a new guiding principle: Inclusion.<\/p>\n

D\u2019Amaro wrote in a blog post, \u201cEvery Disney Parks cast member is familiar with our longstanding tradition of The Four Keys \u2013 Safety, Courtesy, Show and Efficiency \u2013 which have guided our approach to guest service for more than 65 years.\u201d He announced that \u201cInclusion\u201d would become the Fifth Key which, along with the others will \u201cguide us as we interact with guests, collaborate together, create the next generation of Disney products and experiences, and make critical decisions about the future of our business.\u201d<\/p>\n

To its credit, even before that announcement, Disney was making changes.<\/p>\n

The Jungle Cruise, a fixture of Disney\u2019s theme parks since the 1950s,\u00a0got an overhaul<\/a><\/u>\u00a0early last year designed to address years of complaints that it presents a racist view of indigenous people.<\/p>\n
