With the vote, the City Planning commission made a step forward for the Native American community, approving the development overlay for a private school and residential development southeast of Hanes Avenue and Country Road, on a plot of 66 acres. The school, Oceti Sakowin Community Academy would handle student\u2019s k-12, and would span 45 acres. A one story high structure, it would house 20 students per grade, plus 52 staff. Around the area would be 20 townhouse units, 3 apartment buildings made up of 79 dwelling units, plus a 10,000 square foot child care center, able to serve 80 children and 15 staff. Another residential development on the north side would see 16 more townhouse units, and 12 single family units. Extra features would include open space for learning, an outdoor performance space for school activities and graduations, and a loop trail to connect the areas, and even cross country meets.<\/p>\n

NDN Collective originally announced plans to open an Indigenous-led culture-based school in the fall, and are planning to serve 40 students the first year.<\/p>\n
