On International Day of the World\u2019s Indigenous Peoples, we recognize Indigenous knowledge, culture and practices that can inform the way we address climate, foster more inclusive communities, and live up to our responsibilities to future generations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

WASHINGTON<\/strong> \u2014 On the International Day of the World\u2019s Indigenous Peoples, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland\u202fannounced the members of the Advisory Committee on Reconciliation in Place Names, a federal advisory group to help identify and recommend changes to derogatory terms still in use for places throughout the country.m,n<\/p>\n

In November 2021, Secretary Haaland issued Secretary\u2019s Order 3405<\/a>, which proposed a new\u202fFederal Advisory Committee tasked to broadly solicit, review and recommend changes to derogatory geographic and federal land unit names.\u202fCommittee tasks will include\u202fdeveloping a process to solicit and assist with proposals to the Secretary to identify and change derogatory names and will engage with Tribes, the Native Hawaiian Community, state and local governments, and the public.\u202fA separate federal task force (the Derogatory Geographic Names Task Force) was established by Secretary\u2019s Order 3404<\/a> to focus exclusively on the sq-word, a derogatory term\u202fin use more than 650\u202finstances\u202fwithin federal land units alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur nation\u2019s lands and waters should be places to celebrate the outdoors and our shared cultural heritage \u2013 not to perpetuate the legacies of oppression,\u201d said Secretary Haaland<\/strong>. \u201cThe Advisory Committee on Reconciliation in Place Names will accelerate an important process to reconcile derogatory place names. I look forward to listening and learning from this esteemed group.\u201d<\/p>\n

As directed by the Secretary\u2019s Order, the Committee is composed of individuals who represent Tribes and Tribal organizations, Native Hawaiian organizations, the general public, or have expertise in fields\u202fincluding\u202fcivil rights, history, geography and anthropology.\u202fThe Committee also includes four ex officio\u202fmembers representing the Departments of the Interior, Agriculture, Defense and Commerce.<\/p>\n

The Advisory Committee on Reconciliation in Place Names is composed of up to 17 members appointed by the Secretary who represent Tribes and Tribal organizations, Native Hawaiian organizations, the general public, or have expertise in fields including civil rights, history, geography, and anthropology:<\/p>\n
