She was a graduate student at the time and the women weren\u2019t just any elders; they included Tallbear\u2019s mother, as well as her mother\u2019s friends. Tallbear\u2019s standard procedure would have been to have everyone in the group sign informed consent forms, turn on a tape recorder, and get on with it. She was there in a professional capacity to ask Native people for their perspectives on genetic work. But she couldn\u2019t do it. She felt very uncomfortable even thinking about doing it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then it struck me,\u201d she said. \u201cWait a minute, who cares what we think about genetic work? The real problem is what non-Native people think about it.\u201d That\u2019s when Tallbear said she decided to \u201cturn the gaze\u201d onto white scientists. \u201cThink about who gets to study versus who gets studied. Winkelstein<\/a>, who introduced the speaker. \u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to hear from our faculty, as well as experts beyond Penn, about why and how diversity, inclusion, and equity matter in our scholarship, teaching, and clinical practices,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Colonial ideas about race have Indigenous peoples and people of color as objects of scientific curiosity, Tallbear said, and decolonizing science and technology is a growing topic of interest, study, and policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecolonialization envisions the wholesale overhaul of the academy to fundamentally reorient knowledge production based on balancing power relations between Indigenous peoples and Canadians, transforming the academy into something dynamic and new,\u201d Tallbear said, quoting authors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com\/ls\/click?upn=Wsedx-2FIFVV0Gv9ybB6YOZe3WHrdQRnCLlPDpCPUGcMDiuBvLhqeOWYxBE88eKZeUn67aICVAtwQ-2Fb-2FQYfMSeAFosDYX5qRC-2BB2jyayMtoCw-3DjijV_O3XWFiAdWrzzrOIt72qAuHlHelmEsQcdZgB8zTCdE7x4a3ClkCJdl7eBjJ-2BTWZ-2FauNlvdMocbk3dttmvCZi751ZSetfJJVhmdE-2FAOf5EUcKoOIQg7M7PfGd5UHVMpide0Gl90UNkYAQsKyODng-2FLxt-2BqX0NjPfWwIT88RtPU-2FaErAYZ7MKa2usKEMMaJpWRvkOexYDPFur-2FmM3-2FPrhRfdz1koqu5Md2wQaF2mG0izWkGD1a04736FIq-2B0fjD17LnmUbeVn2xEw-2B5qLY-2FMaNuquJoyEhPyY6vikixJ34eWE09K9d9hr415vWVStgUBKYV-2F0mfYbfCo6BtzXYvgkX-2BnLkXsRRWjc-2BKzABp6OGMChKZQJ7MRU3h9ZknSxSR5296YxSHs2tL9Uh-2Bs9Rbhbl-2F-2BQ-3D-3D\">Adam Gaudry and Danielle Lorenz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For TallBear, this means the restitution of Indigenous land and life. \u201cDecolonization is not a metaphor,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I think about how to achieve proper decolonization, even in small ways in my own programs, what I\u2019m thinking is: How do we get stuff back in order to support the self-determination and the self-governance of our communities?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tallbear gave the Canadian immigration test, which she had to take, coming from South Dakota, as an example. She said the test now includes questions pertaining to Indigenous history and treaties. \u201cIt\u2019s not very much, but it\u2019s important that newcomers to Canada also get a sense of whose traditional lands they are coming into,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that\u2019s kind of an important move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the academic side, Tallbear cited the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com\/ls\/click?upn=g5xPY4ilmIFGcq5wdjnwmSOLyHLnWrk9cfjowonxBvEocf0RX2dRnkHqnsa5KTu0vhwD_O3XWFiAdWrzzrOIt72qAuHlHelmEsQcdZgB8zTCdE7x4a3ClkCJdl7eBjJ-2BTWZ-2FauNlvdMocbk3dttmvCZi751ZSetfJJVhmdE-2FAOf5EUcKoOIQg7M7PfGd5UHVMpide0Gl90UNkYAQsKyODng-2FLxt-2BqX0NjPfWwIT88RtPU-2FaErAYZ7MKa2usKEMMaJpWRvkOexYDPFur-2FmM3-2FPrhRfdz1koqu5Md2wQaF2mG0izWmN4HTM4s-2Fms6BIlOeD5J0MMEv3yCG3viUVth8rwo6-2FtKeaNbWF1nx0TifTUYFs7UN4H8uqIcRUQGM8Z-2FTbRyxM7nPfvxwzUDpWZp3MOJxvd99p4-2FI5XRPHeMjZvRsrhav7ejjvShPN8WQ-2FuG3FiEr391QDuWxqS90YALJn1E03Xw-3D-3D\">Summer Internship for Indigenous Peoples in Genomics (SING)<\/a>.
