A Native American man convicted of killing two FBI agents 49 years ago in South Dakota has lost what could be his final chance at parole, after widespread activism in support of his release.<\/p>\n

Leonard Peltier, 79, is serving two consecutive life terms in prison and is reportedly in failing health. His\u00a0latest parole hearing<\/a>\u00a0was last month, and he won\u2019t be eligible for parole again until June 2026.<\/p>\n

Peltier is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. He was active in the American Indian Movement in 1975 when the shootings occurred.<\/p>\n

According to the FBI<\/a>, agents Ron Williams and Jack Coler were attempting to arrest a man on the Pine Ridge Reservation who was wanted for robbery. They pursued a vehicle containing several occupants, including Peltier, into an area of the reservation where the fatal shootout ensued.<\/p>\n

AIM member\u00a0Joseph Stuntz<\/a>\u00a0also died \u2014 from a shot by a law enforcement sniper, according to federal authorities. The lack of an investigation into Stuntz\u2019s death is one of numerous criticisms that has been leveled against the government\u2019s handling of the incident, the trial and Peltier\u2019s conviction.<\/p>\n

Peltier has maintained his innocence, and numerous people and organizations have rallied to support his parole request. Amnesty International USA\u2019s executive director, Paul O\u2019Brien,\u00a0said in a statement<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday that President Joe Biden should grant Peltier clemency and that \u201ccontinuing to keep Leonard Peltier locked behind bars is a human rights travesty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only are there ongoing, unresolved concerns about the fairness of his trial, he has spent nearly 50 years in prison, is approaching 80 years old, and suffers from several chronic health problems,\u201d O\u2019Brien said.<\/p>\n

NDN Collective, an Indigenous rights organization in Rapid City,\u00a0released a statement<\/a>\u00a0from President and CEO Nick Tilsen.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday is a sad day for Indigenous peoples and justice everywhere,\u201d Tilsen said. \u201cThe U.S. Parole Commission\u2019s denial of parole for Leonard Peltier, America\u2019s longest serving Indigenous political prisoner, is a travesty.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FBI opposed Peltier\u2019s parole request. Director Christopher Wray\u00a0wrote to the Parole Commission<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cPeltier is a remorseless killer who brutally murdered two of our own before embarking on a violent flight from justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout the years, Peltier has never accepted responsibility or shown remorse,\u201d Wray wrote. \u201cHe is wholly unfit for parole.\u201d<\/p>\n
