Monica Garreau-Schmidt<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

RAPID CITY, SD\u2013The City\u2019s Community Relations Commission (CRC), in partnership with Rural America Initiatives, is hosting a presentation on the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre by Monica Garreau-Schmidt. The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, December 5 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Community Room of the Rapid City Public Library.<\/p>\n

Garreau-Schmidt is a descendant of Jenny Tokayamniwin (Walks First Woman), who survived the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek. Garreau-Schmidt provides education on Lakota history, culture and traditions and the second hour of the presentation on the Wounded Knee Massacre will include conversation and questions. On December 29, 1890, over 300 men, women and children were killed at Wounded Knee Creek by US cavalry soldiers. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are honored to join with Rural America Initiatives in hosting this educational session and opportunity with Mrs. Monica Garreau-Schmidt, who will speak about her grandmother\u2019s survival that day,\u201d said Commission Coordinator LaFawn Janis. \u201cThis session is a great opportunity for the community to learn about the Wounded Knee Massacre, to help educate and to acknowledge relatives who survived and those who were lost on December 29, 1890.\u201d<\/p>\n

The last hour will be for conversation and questions. Snacks and beverages will be provided.<\/p>\n
