VERMILLION \u2013 The South Dakota State University Alumni Association has honored an impressive group of distinguished alumni for 2025, celebrating leadership and achievement. Amongst the honorees is Dr. Dawn Tobacco Frank, a trailblazing leader and esteemed SDSU alumnus, recognized among the state\u2019s top graduates in the 2025 Class of Distinguished Alumni by the South Dakota State University Alumni Association.<\/p>\n

Dr. Dawn Tobacco-Frank, a proud Oglala Lakota, has made history as the first seated female president of Oglala Lakota College, exemplifying Lakota leadership and dedication to Native education. Her journey from Pine Ridge Reservation to college president underscores her unwavering commitment to empowering her community and advancing higher education rooted in Lakota values.<\/p>\n

An accomplished scholar, Dr. Tobacco-Frank earned her associate, bachelor\u2019s, and master\u2019s degrees from Oglala Lakota College, followed by her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences through SDSU\u2019s Prairie Ph.D. program. Her academic pursuits reflect her deep dedication to Tribal and higher education.<\/p>\n

Since joining Oglala Lakota College in 2005, Dr. Tobacco-Frank has consistently demonstrated visionary leadership\u2014serving as Vice President for Instruction for nine years, directing graduate studies, and securing multiple accreditation milestones with the Higher Learning Commission. Her extensive experience in higher education administration and tribal health positions her uniquely to lead and innovate. <\/p>\n

Born and raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Dr. Tobacco Frank\u2019s leadership extends beyond academia. She has served in various capacities within the Indian Health Service and the Oglala Sioux Tribe, championing Native health, education, and community development. Her Lakota name, Taoyate Winyankapi Win \u2014 Her People See Her \u2014 reflects her role as a dedicated servant and leader.<\/p>\n

Her mentorship, advocacy for Native higher education, and role as secretary of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium exemplify her commitment to advancing Native voices in education and policy.<\/p>\n

Dr. Dawn Tobacco-Frank\u2019s recognition as a distinguished alumna highlights her inspiring leadership, dedication to her community, and groundbreaking role as a Native woman in higher education. Her story continues to motivate future generations of Native students and leaders.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s distinguished alumni include remarkable individuals from diverse fields, each contributing significantly to their communities and beyond:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Sheryl Doering Meshke (Class of \u201988): The first woman to be named CEO of a U.S. dairy cooperative, leading Associated Milk Producers Inc., the country\u2019s largest cheese cooperative, with a focus on innovation and community stewardship.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Charles Gullickson (Class of \u201977): A prominent Sioux Falls attorney recognized for pioneering legal work in banking and insurance industries across the nation, and a strong supporter of South Dakota arts and community initiatives.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Rich Helsper (Class of \u201974): A dedicated attorney and former legal counsel for SDSU, known for his leadership in law and community service, notably in Brookings and at the state level.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Jill Janecke (\u201901\/M.S. \u201905): Founder of Rising Hope Counseling, a thriving mental health organization serving rural communities across several states, and a passionate advocate for brain health and mental wellness.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Hon. Alan G. Lance Sr. (Class of \u201971): Former Idaho Attorney General and federal judge, a distinguished veteran and former national commander of the American Legion, exemplifying dedicated public service. <\/p>\n
