Iconic First Nations actor Graham Greene died Monday, Sept. 1, in a Toronto hospital after a long illness. He was 73.<\/p>\n

Perhaps best known as Kicking Bird in \u201cDances with Wolves,\u201d Greene also starred in films including \u201cWind River,\u201d \u201cMaverick\u201d and The Green Mile,\u201d and in television productions including \u201cReservation Dogs,\u201d \u201cNorthern Exposure,\u201d Tulsa King,\u201d \u201cWolf Lake\u201d and \u201cEcho.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tributes poured out onto social media, praising him as an actor who opened doors for other Indigenous actors.<\/p>\n

\u201cHeartbroken,\u201d actor Lou Diamond Phillips posted on social media. \u201cFrom Wolf Lake to Longmire, we had a beautiful friendship. An Actor\u2019s Actor. One of the wittiest, wiliest, warmest people I\u2019ve ever known. Iconic and Legendary. RIP, My Brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greene was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor for \u201cDances with Wolves,\u201d which received 12 Oscar nominations and won seven, including best picture and best actor for Kevin Costner.<\/p>\n

Greene also won a Grammy in 2000 for best spoken word album for children for the book, \u201cListen to the Storyteller,\u201d and received a Gemini Award and a Canadian Screen Award. In 2021, he received a star on Canada\u2019s Walk of Fame, according to Variety.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a great man of morals, ethics and character, and will be eternally missed,\u201d his agent, Michael Greene, said in a statement to Deadline.<\/p>\n

Greene, Oneida, was born in Ohsweken on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario.<\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, and his daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene.<\/p>\n
