RAPID CITY \u2013 Today, NDN Collective launched Feed the People, a campaign responding to the U.S. government shutdown that is disrupting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and deepening food insecurity in many Indigenous and rural communities.<\/p>\n

The Feed the People campaign is seeking immediate funding to purchase and distribute bison meat boxes to 500+ Indigenous families in the Mni Luzahan (Rapid City) area affected by the SNAP funding crisis. This effort will provide high-protein, nutrient-dense, culturally significant food to those facing hunger, while also supporting Indigenous food sovereignty by sourcing meat from Tribally or Native managed bison herds.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cuts and disruptions to SNAP highlight an unsustainable food and economic system that doesn\u2019t work for many Indigenous people \u2013 particularly those living in rural areas,\u201d said Dr. Valeriah Big Eagle, Director of He Sapa Initiatives at NDN Collective. \u201cWe\u2019re launching Feed the People to provide culturally relevant food to those who need it most right now \u2013 all from Indigenous owned businesses who practice reciprocity, respect for the animal, and support community well-being as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe SNAP crisis is shedding light on the deep need for expanded Indigenous food sovereignty and bison restoration \u2013 both of which require LANDBACK,\u201d said Foster Cournoyer Hogan, Bison Director at NDN Collective. \u201cWe\u2019re committed to making sure our people are fed during this emergency, while also continuing to support the rebuilding of traditional food systems that will provide for us \u2013 and heal the land \u2013 for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
