Just as the dominant culture holds their religious creation stories in high esteem, even when it runs contrary to the science taught in their schools, so the Lakota in South Dakota hold their creation stories in similar esteem, despite teaching science in their schools refuting it.

The clash between science and belief is as old as science itself, and just as many white religions fail to understand, many tribes fail to understand that science does not investigate to validate what it already holds as truth—science investigates to disprove every theory, every idea, every paper submitted for peer review. This is Karl Popper’s Falsification Principle and it is an elemental component of the Scientific Method: “…principles and procedures for the systematic pursuit of knowledge involving the recognition and formulation of a problem, the collection of data through observation and experiment, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.”

If a probe to Mars is a fraction of an inch off entering the atmosphere it will bounce off the atmosphere into deep space. Science must be precise. Precision in hunter/gather societies was seldom necessary. To fit two thing together, you just rubbed or cut on one or the other until they fit. Regardless of your skill, you didn’t write a book with graphic detail, for some guy to read a hundred years later. Your most advanced technology did not challenge science which you did not understand, science that said the earth revolves around the sun, that sunlight takes eight minutes to reach earth. Lightning is scientifically described as, “electrostatic discharges occurring through the atmosphere between two electrically charged regions.” It is not the anger display of a thunder being.

All of this matters for a lot of reasons but one particular region where it matters most is when looking at the first human presence in North America. Tribes claim they were always there. Many African American groups claim they are the real Indians, here before Columbus, and that our tribes are really just Mongoloid invaders from Siberia. This is easily disproven by the fact there is zero archaeological evidence supporting their claim and they completely lack a recorded history, and lack language and customs. But just as science is not used to dispute tribal creation myths of the Bible, so science cannot dispute these claims. But a preponderance of the scientific and historical evidence renders them transparently and aspirationally absurd.

So, too, tribes, assert North American origin, when nothing concrete can show human presence in North America before 23,000 years ago. Claims have been made that push human presence back more than 100,000 years, but these claims did not survive peer review. There are no fossils of prehistoric men dating back tens upon tens of thousands of years, no artifacts, cave paintings, camp sites, animal kills. Nothing.

Tribes are quick to embrace any science which validates anti-science origin myths but reject out6 of hand science which disputes it. To find out when our ancestors got here and where they came from may never be fully mapped out, but science has uncovered truths unimaginable even just a generation ago. No tribe did this. Science did it.

On the other hand, science tries to have their cake and eat it too. On the one hand it sponsors vigorous group investigations and joint papers into a particular aspect of paleo-North America, and asks for and receives the participation of Natives who sometimes present anti-science theories, such as the horse was here before Columbus, which the scientific team incorporates into the paper, while privately stating they not only don’t hold these views, they do not regard them as scientific.

Social pressures grind against the truth from both sides, because the truth becomes secondary to the passion invested in the ideal or belief, but especially in the identity.

Much of what science determines is certain, and some of it is always subject to revision, but revision that will be put to rigorous peer review.

The earliest verifiable human presence in North America is White Sands, New Mexico, 23,500-21,700 years ago. Preserved in ancient mud, is a track way of human footprints, a family group. It appears a woman carrying her child, set the child down and picked him back up. Since a wall of ice often two miles thick prevented access to North America from the north, how did this family get into New Mexico? The Pacific Coast is the only answer. Ice had tied up fresh water so the ocean was 400 feet lower than today turning vast areas of present day ocean bottom into coastline. This coastline was not uniform, sometimes it was at the same place it is today, but if the underwater shelf cooperated, land could stretch hundreds of miles from present day coastline. We cannot explore the route these people took because it is under hundreds of feet of icy cold water.

But they didn’t just magically appear in New Mexico. It is reasonable to assume it takes time to walk down the coast and then inland 650 as the crow flies paleo coast miles. We could reasonably assert humans were present in North America up to 30,000 years ago.

Applying the strictest of standards, the next verified site of human presence is Cooper’s Ferry, Idaho, approximately 15,800 years ago. The significance is that is a gap of roughly 6,000 years. A lot can happen in that stretch of time. The pyramids were over a thousand years shy of existing 6000 years ago.

Back about a half century ago, Clovis people were considered the first inhabitants of the continent, with their famous spear point. They left a huge footprint behind and their presence is well documented. Where did they come from, we don’t even know that about them. What did they look like? What language did they speak? Who did they become?

The Clovis were a mighty people and they survived in a world far more savage and difficult than the one the European diaspora invaded. But we now know men walked across muddy flats in New Mexico ten thousand years before their time. They walked through a west full of gigantic lakes and gigantic fauna: mammoths, mastodon, cheetahs, saber tooth cats, lions, dire wolves, giant short faced cave bears, giant ground sloths, giant bison, horses, and camels.

Sites have been found down in South America, between 8000-14,000 years old, and so man was on the move, and because the lifespan of men are short, and because the hunter/gatherers have no written language, and kept no records, we will never know through purely human investigation what the past populating of the Americas entailed. Someday AI may break investigation barriers in ways we cannot imagine but until then the mystery of who we were as a people, how we got here, and who we became will be revealed by the slow grinding process of peer reviewed science.

(James Giago Davies is an enrolled member of OST.
