Longtime SDNA member and Native Sun News Today Publisher Tim Giago was a keynote speaker Monday during the annual convention of the Native American Journalists Association in Prior Lake, Minn.
\nGiago talked about the efforts in the early 1980s to start the NAJA organization. Today, NAJA boasts 600 members and an extensive program of training and resources for journalists.
\nHe also talked to the convention crowd of about 175 journalists about the importance of educating the public about Native American issues through their storytelling. He spoke about the many young journalists who have worked for him over the years and went on to establish their own careers in journalism in Indian Country and elsewhere.
\nIt was inspiring to see the many young journalists who approached Mr. Giago following his speech to shake his hand and thank him for the example he has set for all Native journalists and for what he has done to create the foundations for the NAJA organization.
