We’re excited to announce our plan to launch a mobile app in [TBD, originally stated as 2018]! We are currently working out the multilingual details of its operation. For budgetary reasons we will have to narrow the number of language preference options available to users of the mobile app. While all of our websites employ machine translation, and are thus able to respond to a broader range of requests (e.g., over 100 languages), the mobile app will have to employ human translation and will thereby be limited to 12 non-English language preference options.

We’ve surveyed census data indicating the most common non-English languages spoken in the United States, as well as the census data for individual states. We’ve paid special attention to the prevalence of non-English languages spoken among lower income households as well, in an attempt to provide the most relevant options for our users.

Here is the list of language options we are currently considering, in addition to English, for the mobile app: Arabic, Chinese, Dakota, French, French Creole, German, Korean, Navaho, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Yupik.

Our websites will continue to offer over 100 non-English language preference options. This update concerns only the mobile app language options. If you have questions or comments about the multilingual plan of our mobile app, we will try to answer them here.
