OST primary approaches
PINE RIDGE – The Oglala Sioux Tribe Election Commission has released its certified candidate list for the OST primary election which will take place on October 13.
The list features 81 certified candidates for either OST President, OST Vice-President, or district representatives.
There are 11 candidates running for OST President and 4 running for OST Vice-President.
- Tribal President – John Yellow Bird Steele (seven time President); Darla Black (former Vice-President); Darrin Merrival; Gregory Ross; Troy “Scott” Weston (former President); Kevin Killer; Lyle Jack; Julian Bear Runner (incumbent President); Chase Iron Eyes; Curtis Temple and Rae Ann Red Owl.
- Tribal Vice-President – Alicia Mousseau; Bryan Brewer (former President); Cindy Giago and Ricky Gray Grass (current 5th member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe Executive Officers).
There are 66 candidates running for district representative positions. There are 6 candidates in the Eagle Nest District, 3 candidates in the LaCreek District, 8 candidates in the Medicine Root District, 8 candidates in the Oglala District, 6 candidates in the Pass Creek District, 9 candidates in the Pine Ridge District, 9 candidates in the Porcupine District, 10 candidates in the Wakpamni District, and 8 candidates in the Wounded Knee District.
Only 3 current district representative’s names do not appear on the list. They are Jim Meeks, Chancey Wilson, and Rich Greenwald from the Eagle Nest District, Medicine Root District, and Pine Ridge District respectively.
- Eagle Nest District – H. Duane Yellow Hawk (incumbent); Jerome High Horse; Blaine Little Thunder; Jennilee Rooks; Wesley Hawkins, Sr. and Colleen Bettelyoun.
- Lacreek District – Wanda Johnson (former district representative); Craig Dillon (incumbent) and Cora White Horse (incumbent).
- Medicine Root District – Gearald Coumoyer, Jr.; Joe Reddest; Howard Rooks; Austin Watkins, Sr.(former district representative); James “Toby” Big Boy (former district representative); Beau Little Whiteman (incumbent); Ryan Jumping Eagle (incumbent) and Darrel Mesteth.
- Oglala District – Debra Mousseau; Wendell Youngman, Jr.; Virginia Starr; Valerie Janis (incumbent); Stanley Star Comes Out; Jason Little; Tyler Yellow Boy and Valentina Merdanian (incumbent).
- Pass Creek District – Ron Dubray; Consuelo Means; Julie Bad Wound; Anna Halverson; James Cross (incumbent) and Lydia Bear Killer (incumbent).
- Pine Ridge District – George Dreamer, Jr.; Julian Spotted Bear; Elvyn D. Bissonette; Robin L. Tapio (incumbent); Ella John Carlow (former district representative); Nakina Mills (incumbent); Jennifer Spotted Bear and Cheryl White Rabbit.
- Porcupine District – Patrick Ross (former district representative); Paul John Iron Cloud, Jr.; Darrell Hernandez; Eldon Black Bull; Philip Big Crow (incumbent); Richard Iron Cloud; David Pourier (former district representative); Randy Lays Bad (incumbent) and Naomi Felicia.
- Wakpamni District – Norene Mousseau; Joni Morrisette; Vincent “Woodzy” Two Lance, Jr.; Linda Red Feather Garcia; Arlene Catches The Enemy; Jaqueline Siers (incumbent); Sonia Little Hawk Weston (incumbent); Kenneth L. Hill; Jane Little Hawk Rodriguez and Michael C. Carlow, Sr.
- Wounded Knee District – Bernardo Rodriquez, Jr.; Phillip Jumping Eagle (former district representative); Garfield Steele (former district representative); Garfield Apple (incumbent); Dakota High Hawk; Duane R. Ross, Jr.; Glen Gibbons (incumbent) and Cynthia Clifford.
The certified primary election results will be made public on October 16. A general election sample ballot will be posted on October 23. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is on October 28. The general election will be held on November 3 and the official results will be made public on November 16.
