Chairman Frazier statement regarding South Dakota Army National Guard deployment to Texas.
EAGLE BUTTE – Harold Frazier, Chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, sent a letter to the Governor of South Dakota requesting assistance on assessment and establishment of medical facilities in anticipation of the COVID-19 pandemic spread. Today, I heard that the same Governor is sending as many as 50 troops from the South Dakota National Guard to the State of Texas at the behest of private donors.
He had a question for Governor Kristi Noem: “Why did you not deploy soldiers at my request within the borders of the State of South Dakota during a national emergency but are willing to send them to do the work of private donors over a thousand miles away?
The inaction of actually protecting the people of South Dakota is what prompted the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe to take the drastic measures we did to protect all residents within our boundaries, regardless of tribal enrollment status.
Yet when the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe worked to protect our borders, the Governor of South Dakota threatened us with lawsuits and complained about strict border control to the Federal government. Is it because the Governor of South Dakota wanted to come on the reservation and become the American she presumes others aren’t?
There is work that needs to done here in South Dakota. We are in the grasp of a serious drought and the South Dakota National Guard would better serve us by providing water to the farmers, ranchers, businesses and citizens that need it here, now. I will start passing the hat for private donations so you can make that happen.”
