Covid-19 update
PIERRE—With the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally just ending and schools beginning, many South Dakotans are worried about increased Covid-19 cases. The South Dakota Department of Health’s daily Covid-19 numbers show a steady increase in active cases.
As of August 18, the South Dakota Department of Health’s daily COVID-19 update showed 357 new confirmed cases in the state, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 112,058. 19 new probable cases were reported, which brings the total of probable cases to 15,638.
Currently in South Dakota, 1,939 cases are considered active, that number is up from 1,693 on Monday. There are 105 people hospitalized in South Dakota right now, with a total of 6,627 ever hospitalized. The total number of South Dakotans who have recovered from Covid-19 is 123,701.
While there is currently no plan to implement mask mandates in schools locally, the CDC has recommended that even fully vaccinated people wear masks in public when social distancing is not possible and schools across the country have started mandating masks. New Zealand recently implemented a nation-wide lockdown after one positive case was reported.
