COVID-19 update

South Dakota continues to report record breaking numbers of new cases and patients hospitalized because of COVID-19. Each day of the last week, the state has reported over 400 new cases. On Sep. 26, South Dakota reported nearly 600 new cases. Deaths from the virus in South Dakota are now at 218.

Oglala Lakota County has jumped up and past 200 positive COVID-19 cases to almost 300 within a week. Within the county, over 70 of the cases are currently active and 3 people have died.

Pennington County is now over 2,300 cases which is around 500 more than last week. Pennington County has also had 37 people die.

Over 200 inmates at the South Dakota Women’s Prison have tested positive for the virus within the last week.

Kristi Noem continues to promote populated events in South Dakota such as the Buffalo Roundup which took place Sep. 25 and hosted thousands of visitors. She has also promoted the upcoming pheasant hunting season by posting a video on Facebook in which she says “less COVID, more hunting.”

The Lakota Nation Invitational has been moved to the spring months instead of its normal December schedule. The Black Hills Powwow and Native American Day Parade have been postponed until 2021. Donald Trump continues to downplay the virus although more than 208,000 deaths have been reported.

The annual Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo is still planned for early 2021.
