Covid-19 update
RAPID CITY—Just weeks after the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, positive cases of Covid-19 and its variants are spiking in the Black Hills. Just prior to the start of the Rally, the South Dakota Department of Health (SD DOH) reported 657 active cases on August 4th. As of August 31, we have 5,035 active cases, an increase of 660% from the beginning of the month. Of the 66 counties in South Dakota, 57 are listed as experiencing “high” community spread.
As of August 31, the South Dakota Department of Health’s daily COVID-19 update showed 908 new confirmed cases in the state, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 116,158. 112 new probable cases were reported, which brings the total of probable cases to 16,101.
The SD DOH reported on August 31 that 5,035 cases are considered active, nearly double the number of active cases reported on August 23, which was 2,589. There are 216 people hospitalized in South Dakota right now, with a total of 6,819 ever hospitalized. The total number of South Dakotans who have recovered from Covid-19 is 125,155. The total deaths recorded are 2,069.
