Native Women’s Association of Canada to host national roundtable to start conversation on decolonizing ‘beauty’
OTTAWA, CANADA – The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) and Sephora Canada will host the first national Zoom roundtable on Indigenous beauty on Tuesday, October 19 from 2 pm to 4 pm ET.
The roundtable, which will be facilitated by Waneek Horn-Miller, the first Mohawk woman from Canada to participate in the Olympic Games, will explore the representation and diversity of Indigenous beauty, why it matters and how it should be portrayed.
This first-of-its-kind conversation will offer Indigenous women and gender diverse people a public forum to voice their thoughts on a more inclusive, equitable and representative beauty industry that reflects the true diversity of their communities. This is especially critical as Indigenous women and gender diverse people seek healing from the traumas of colonization, including the inter-generational abuses of the residential schools and the violence that had led to a disproportionate number of murders and disappearances within their communities.
The roundtable is closed to the public, but hundreds of Indigenous women and gender diverse people from across Canada have pre-registered to participate. They include youth and Elders, First Nations, Métis, Inuit and Afro-Indigenous, and 2SLGBTQQIA.
The dialogue and insights shared during this session will lead to the development of an Indigenous Beauty Insights report, which will help inform and guide future change for Indigenous beauty representation in the industry.
