Dustin Sene selected as new superintendent of  Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument 

CROW AGENCY, Mont. — The National Park Service (NPS) announced the selection of Dustin Sene as superintendent of Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. He will begin his new assignment on June 4.

Sene has worked for the National Park Service for over 15 years. He currently serves as superintendent of Tonto National Monument. He began his NPS career in Yellowstone National Park in technology services before transitioning to resource and visitor protection for the park. Prior to joining the NPS, he worked as an engineer in the Silicon Valley designing and implementing network.

In his new position, Sene will report to the superintendent of the Powder River Group of Eastern Montana and Wyoming national parks which includes Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Devils Tower National Monument, and Fort Laramie National Historic Site.      

  “We’re thrilled to welcome Dustin to the team,” said James Hill, Powder River Group superintendent. “His commitment to collaboration and teamwork, his experience working with Tribal partners and park stakeholders, and his Montana roots make him a great fit for Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.”

 

“I am honored to serve as the new superintendent of Little Bighorn Battlefield and to play a part in preserving this important site and its story,” said Sene. “I am passionate about providing visitors with meaningful experiences and strong connections to American history and lessons of our past. I am also deeply committed to building relationships with the Tribes and the local community and to collaborate with our partner organizations.”

The Battle of Little Bighorn was fought along the ridges, steep bluffs, and ravines of the Little Bighorn River, in south-central Montana on June 25-26, 1876, between the Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes, and the 7th Regiment of the US Cavalry, along with its Crow and Arikara scouts. The Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho were victorious in this battle, but both sides lost many lives. The battle was not an isolated confrontation, but part of a much larger strategic campaign designed to force the submission of non-reservation Sioux and Cheyenne.     

 One of Senes first tasks will be overseeing the 147^th Anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25, 2023.
