CRST Tribal member Lloyd Bald Eagle (62) of Red Scaffold, went missing from Rapid City on November 1, 2022. After media coverage and searches in May 2023, it was announced last week that his remains have been identified.

Bald Eagle is the brother of Phyllis Bald Eagle and A.úkašú. .opá Ohitika.wi.. Another relative, Sharon Bald Eagle, has been missing since 1984. The search for this family member is finally over. “It’s painful, but I’m glad we got closure. I’m glad that he’s found. He gets to come home,” said sister Ohitika.wi..

Bald Eagle is known for his work in film, including as a producer of the 2019 documentary “Whitewashed: The Ethnic Cleansing of America” (www.rednationff.com/ whitewashed/). Director Dave Taylor said Bald Eagle was “one of the most resilient people I have ever known.” Ohitika.wi. said her brother was soft-spoken, “but when he talked, he listened. He got people‘s attention.”

Human remains found in Rapid City in February 2024 are now known to be those of Bald Eagle. A family member provided DNA which aided in identification. Bald Eagle was found in a culvert along N. Lacross St. during a regular inspection. At the time, it was treated as an unattended death. Rapid City Police said last week the autopsy showed no signs of foul play. A spokesperson said collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Affairs was invaluable in the investigation.

Another CRST Tribal member, Duane “Dewey” Yellow Cloud, went missing about the same time, on December 12, 2022. Yellow Cloud has yet to be found. Others from Cheyenne River whose whereabouts are unknown or whose murders are yet unsolved include Tessa Curley (1981- 2020), East Lee (1995-2015), Jesse Cook (1983-2016), Kevin Marshall (b. 1978 missing 2016) and Sharon Bald Eagle (b. 1972 missing 1984).
