Sculpture ‘Tiwahe’ dedication at Remembering the Children Memorial
RAPID CITY, SD — The Remembering the Children Memorial invites the public to a special ceremony marking the installation of the sculpture “Tiwahe”, a powerful and collaborative addition to the memorial site honoring the children who lost their lives and the families forever impacted.
The Sculpture Installation and Plaza Dedication will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. MST at the memorial site located at 3550 Canyon Lake Drive, Rapid City, SD 57702.
“This sculpture and plaza are spaces for remembrance, for acknowledging a painful past, and to envision a future where our children and grandchildren are free from this dark chapter of history.”” said Amy Sazue, Executive Director of the Remembering the Children Memorial. “We welcome all to join us in honoring the legacy of those impacted and to stand together in the spirit of healing.”
This sculpture was a collaboration between Dale Lamphere and the Remembering the Children Memorial team, spiritual leaders, elders, as well as area children. The creation of this sculpture also coincides with the first ever Remembering the Children Memorial Apprentice, Derek Santos, an Oglala Lakota sculptor from Pine Ridge, who is creating his own piece to be installed at a later date.
The event is open to the public. Community members of all backgrounds are encouraged to attend and participate in this meaningful day of unity and remembrance.
