Local school leaders meet with State Representative to discuss education priorities

PIERRE – Two superintendents from South Dakota’s rural school districts traveled to the state capital this week to advocate for their students and communities.

Connie Kaltenbach, Superintendent of Oglala Lakota County School District, and Carol Galbraith, Superintendent of Bennett County School District, met with District 27 Representative Peri Pourier on February 4 to discuss critical education issues facing their districts.

The meeting, held at the state capitol, brought together educational leaders who serve some of South Dakota’s most geographically dispersed and economically challenged communities. Both districts face unique challenges common to rural areas, including teacher recruitment and retention, infrastructure needs, and ensuring equitable access to educational resources.

Representative Pourier, who represents District 27, has been a vocal advocate for education funding and rural school support during her tenure in the legislature. The timing of the meeting coincides with ongoing legislative sessions where education budgets and policy reforms are under consideration.

The meeting underscores the importance of direct communication between local education leaders and state lawmakers as they work to address the needs of students across South Dakota’s diverse communities.

Both superintendents are expected to continue engaging with state officials as the legislative session progresses and education-related bills move through the committee process.
