First Floor Highway Releases Debut Album Under the Sun
ALBUQUERQUE – Aho! First Floor Highway, a featured 2025 New Mexico Entertainment Magazine music artist, has released their debut full-length album, Under the Sun, a collection of songs that blends sun-soaked rock ‘n roll with Indigenous influence. The album is now available on all streaming platforms and can also be downloaded for free directly from the band’s website: www.1STFLRHWY.com
First Floor Highway is part of a growing wave of Indigenous sonic artists shaping contemporary music on their own terms. Fronted by a vocalist from the Grand Portage Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, the band draws on American rock influences while weaving in lived experience, cultural perspective, and touches of NDN slang in a way that feels natural and unforced. Their sound reflects both regional identity and broad accessibility, connecting with audiences in both Native and non-Native communities.
Under the Sun explores themes of love, loss, identity, and the challenge of navigating multiple worlds at once. While not framed as a direct statement, the album offers a perspective that resonates with listeners who understand the balance between staying connected to where they come from and continuing to grow beyond it. “This album is about where we come from, and what we carry with us,” says lead singer Jordan O. James. “We wanted to make something that feels honest to us, and to the people who might hear themselves in it.”
The lead single, Grand Entry, captures the band’s core energy, pairing traditional rock ‘n roll drive with a contemporary Indigenous perspective rooted in shared life stories, experiences, and meme-worthy expressions. Inspired in part by time on the modern powwow circuit, the track offers a present-day narrative that nods to artists like Keith Secola while carving out its own lane.
First Floor Highway has built a strong presence across New Mexico, performing at events including 49s during the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow, the New Mexico State Fair, and a range of New Mexico festivals and venues, and continues to grow its following through live performance, recorded work, and the tradition of giveaways at every show.
