Homicide investigation underway in shooting of 16 year old
Rapid City – The suspect responsible for the death of a 16-year-old female is in custody as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding a shooting at 1721 North Maple Avenue.
At around 9:30 a.m. on August 27th, police were dispatched to the address for a report of gunfire heard in the area. It was then reported that a juvenile female had been shot. On arrival, police located the female and began emergency life-saving measures. A medical unit arrived and transported the female to the hospital for the treatment of serious, life-threatening injuries. Later in the day, police learned that she had died as a result of the injuries sustained in the shooting. The victim is identified as 16-year-old McKenzie Garreaux of Rapid City.
During the course of the investigation, police developed information that the suspect responsible for the shooting was 19-year-old Nathanial Gray Eagle of Rapid City. A firearm believed to be used in the shooting was also recovered near the location of the incident. Police located Gray Eagle at 610 E. North Street. He was taken into custody without incident. Charges are currently pending in the case.
The investigation into the shooting remains open and active, and is being conducted jointly with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. Additional agencies assisting in the response to the shooting include the Rapid City Fire Department and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.
“The recent increase in violence that has victimized the residents of this neighborhood is unacceptable” says Chief of Police Don Hedrick. “We will continue to maintain an active presence in this area to deter crime, but this is an issue that is bigger than the police. It will take an entire community to come together to tackle the violence plaguing this neighborhood. The RCPD remains committed to partnering with residents, property owners, cultural leaders, and community stakeholders to reduce the victimization taking place in this part of our city. Today’s incident is another example of senseless crime, and the collective sympathies of the Rapid City Police Department go out to the victim and her loved ones.”
