By Holly Wells

Memorial Day is a National Holiday to remember those whom had paid the ultimate price. This year TAPS will be played Nationwide at 3:00 P.M. (MST) May 30th 2022 to honor our fallen soldiers. Please take a moment of silence to show your respect and support of our national treasures.

While visiting your National Cemetery’s please keep in mind a few things.

  • Be respectful of other visitors
  • Treat all grave sites as if it was your loved one is there
  • Do not remove, disturb or destroy the flowers, gifts or other offerings
  • If there is coins on the headstones leave it. There is special meanings to the coins.

Ever hear that saying see a penny pick it up all day long you’ll have good luck! Well there is an etiquette when it comes to coins placed on a headstone at the cemeteries.

Pennies on graves symbolize respect and remembrance, and this makes them the most common coins you’ll find on graves. They show that a person has visited the grave and given their thoughts and respects to the fallen military member.

Nickels could symbolize that you knew the military member because you trained together at boot camp.
Dime Seeing a dime on a grave could mean that the person who visited served directly alongside the military member
Quarter often imply that you were present when the military member passed away
Please visit your National Cemetery this year to honor and show your respect and gratitude for all our service Men and Woman. Black Hills National Cemetery is located at 20901 Pleasant Valley Dr, Sturgis, SD and is open from sun rise to sun set.
