NDN Collective launches ‘Feed the People’ Campaign
RAPID CITY – Today, NDN Collective launched Feed the People, a campaign responding to the U.S. government shutdown that is disrupting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and deepening food insecurity in many Indigenous and rural communities.
The Feed the People campaign is seeking immediate funding to purchase and distribute bison meat boxes to 500+ Indigenous families in the Mni Luzahan (Rapid City) area affected by the SNAP funding crisis. This effort will provide high-protein, nutrient-dense, culturally significant food to those facing hunger, while also supporting Indigenous food sovereignty by sourcing meat from Tribally or Native managed bison herds.
Donations to the Feed the People campaign can be made here.
“The cuts and disruptions to SNAP highlight an unsustainable food and economic system that doesn’t work for many Indigenous people – particularly those living in rural areas,” said Dr. Valeriah Big Eagle, Director of He Sapa Initiatives at NDN Collective. “We’re launching Feed the People to provide culturally relevant food to those who need it most right now – all from Indigenous owned businesses who practice reciprocity, respect for the animal, and support community well-being as a whole.”
“The SNAP crisis is shedding light on the deep need for expanded Indigenous food sovereignty and bison restoration – both of which require LANDBACK,” said Foster Cournoyer Hogan, Bison Director at NDN Collective. “We’re committed to making sure our people are fed during this emergency, while also continuing to support the rebuilding of traditional food systems that will provide for us – and heal the land – for generations to come.”
NDN Collective is an Indigenous led organization dedicated to building Indigenous power. Through organizing, activism, philanthropy, grantmaking, capacity building, and narrative change, we are creating sustainable solutions on Indigenous terms.
