New community fridge in downtown Rapid City

RAPID CITY—Local zero waste store and community space, Hippie Haven, is now home to an outdoor community fridge, the first of its kind in downtown Rapid City.

Donations of unopened and unexpired fridge and freezer foods are now accepted at Hippie Haven 24/7, and community members are also encouraged to participate in the necessary organizing and cleaning.

Hippie Haven has already been collecting and redistributing canned goods and personal care items since September 2020, in alignment with their mission to reduce waste and provide much-needed community resources.

“Thanks to a donation from Breadroot Natural Foods Coop, this new community fridge allows us to expand our existing food redistribution program” says Callee Ackland, the female-veteran-founder of Hippie Haven.

Between 30 to 40 percent of the US food supply is wasted, yet one in six children in South Dakota are at risk of going hungry. The community fridge will reduce the amount of local food waste as well as fighting food insecurity amongst our most vulnerable community members.

Hippie Haven graciously thanks Anna Chief, Breadroot Natural Foods Coop, Sage Dausch, 13th Seat Herbs, Vilma Killsback, and Garrett Buckingham for helping to make the new community fridge possible!
