Noem and Critical Race Theory

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has come out with her proclamation on the use of Critical Race Theory in South Dakota’s public schools. And we suppose this proclamation also included South Dakota’s private schools.

The major point we garner from Noem’s proclamation is that the school children should not be made to feel guilty over things that happened in the past. They do not need to know about racial discrimination or prejudice amongst their own people.

Perhaps Noem believes that if the children never learn about it, therefore it never happened.

Fortunately the South Dakota government has no jurisdiction over the schools on the Indian reservations. Perhaps if any of the schools receive state funds that puts a different light on it. We at Native Sun News Today were weary long ago when we saw some of our reservation schools accepting state dollars. Anytime the Oglala Sioux Tribe opened up to receive state funds if also opened the door for the State to start imposing its laws on to the Indian governments.

It is imperative that the Native children living on all of the 9 Indian reservations in South Dakota continue to have the right to learn about their own history. They need to know what it was in the past that brought them to this point in their lives.

The white children in South Dakota grew up with a totally different perspective on life than did the children born and raised on an Indian reservation. Our histories may have been parallel, but they were still different. While the state was making every effort to take over the land of the Lakota, the Lakota were fighting to stop the state from taking over that land.

Before the Lakota began to take control of what could be taught in reservation schools, it was the state who dictated that topic. It was the Lakota teachers who brought the true history of their people into the reservation school’s curriculum. We had our own history and many of us had to go outside of the state school system in order to learn it. Reservation schools must continue to do what they were held back from doing for so many years and that is to teach the true history of the Lakota people and its leaders. Our history is about who we are as a People.
