Second Annual Earth Day Powwow set for April 25 at Pine Ridge
PINE RIDGE — Red Cloud Renewable will host the Second Annual Earth Day Powwow on Saturday, April 25, bringing together dancers, families, and community members from across the Pine Ridge Reservation and the region. The celebration will run from sunrise to sunset at the Pine Ridge Powwow Grounds, with Grand Entry scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
The event is designed to honor Earth Day through Lakota culture, tradition, and community gathering. Organizers say the powwow offers a positive space for people of all ages to come together, reconnect, and celebrate the land.
This year’s celebration expands with a full slate of community activities. Registration opens at 11:00 a.m. for a 5K Run/Walk, Cornhole Tournament, and Three Point Shot Contest, all aimed at promoting wellness and friendly competition. Families can enjoy face painting, a dunk tank, and a wide range of arts, crafts, and food vendors throughout the day. Traditional foods, including buffalo stew, fry bread, and wojapi, will be served.
A special honoring will take place for Tiny Decory, recognizing her decades of service to Lakota youth and her leadership in suicide-prevention and cultural healing efforts across the reservation.
Arena events will feature Eyapaha Daryl Red Cloud and host drum Mahpiya Luta Oka. Dancers will receive day pay, with additional specials to be announced.
“We’re excited to bring the community together again for Earth Day,” said Alicia Hayden, Administration and Communications Manager for Red Cloud Renewable. “This event celebrates not only our cultural traditions but also our shared responsibility to care for Uncí Maka, Grandmother Earth.”
Red Cloud Renewable, a nonprofit based on Pine Ridge, works to expand workforce training, renewable energy education, and sustainable community development. The Earth Day Powwow is part of the organization’s ongoing effort to support cultural strength alongside environmental stewardship.
