On Tuesday, June 21st, Yellen and the new U.S. Treasurer Marilynn “Lynn” Malerba (Mohegan) met with Tribal officials at St. Francis Indian School. They were open to learn about the needs of the S.D. Tribes and how American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds are being used.

The federal delegation arrived in the afternoon for concluding comments and cultural ceremonies at the SGU Michael H. Benge Student Union on the Antelope Lake campus.

Prior to public activities, Secretary Yellen scheduled time to visit with the new SGU Executive Vice President Ted Hamilton. He highlighted the key issues identified by SGU President Lionel Bordeaux.

  • Equitable program funding for Indian Nations and Tribal Colleges & Universities (TCUs).
  • Increase the annual Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) appropriations for TCUs.
  • Revise the Universal Services grant program (E-RATE) for TCUs to acquire discounts for ongoing technology and internet support.
  • Infrastructure development and planning for TCUs accessing federal funds through the Build Back Better Funds and other sources.
  • Addressing more long-term Tribal needs such as education, housing, business and workforce development, health care, Lakota culture and language preservation, land resources management and renewable energy after ARPA funds expires.

Ted Hamilton stated “This is a historic event in two ways!  The first visit by a sitting U.S. Secretary of Treasury and the second by the announcement of the first American Indian Treasurer in United States History.  Sinte Gleska is excited about the announcement of Chief Malerba’s appointment to this important position.”

Tribal officials attending the SGU event included Scott Herman, (RST President, SGU graduate); Nicole Marshall, (RST Secretary); Keith Horse Looking (RST Sergeant-at-Arms); Stephan DeNoyer III (RST Treasurer); and several Rosebud Sioux Tribal Council members.

“We appreciate the Rosebud Sioux Tribe for showing support of Tribal Education by including both Sinte Gleska University and St. Francis Indian School” observed Hamilton.

“The University’s support staff are to be commended for their work in preparing and hosting this historical event; they did a great job,” said Hamilton.
