Treaty Council hosts reservation wide meeting
The Oyate Topa Treaty Council is hosting a reservation wide meeting on January 29, 2025, at the Cheyenne River Motel conference room, 24348 US Hwy 212, Eagle Butte, SD, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The gathering aims to “plant seeds of hope and awareness,” inviting participation from all tribes and community members, as emphasized by respected Lakota elder Vivian High Elk.
The agenda will cover treaty discussions, jurisdiction issues, judicial concerns, land rights, tribal council matters, and future planning. Lakota elder Ivan Looking Horse, a Treaty Council member, will serve as the emcee for the event, which will include two meals.
A notable speaker, Jonathon Okute Maza, an Indigenous activist and journalist, will address the assembly. Maza, who operates the Western Hemisphere Indigenous Network (WHIN) and hosts the Red Shirt podcast, is passionate about raising awareness of Indigenous issues, including anti-Indian policies and tribal sovereignty. He encourages everyone to attend, stating, “It’s time to come together for the greater good… Our ancestors are leading this (movement).”
