Giving is at the very heart of Christmas. It’s the season when neighbors reach out to neighbors, when communities lift up those who need it most, and when joy is shared in abundance. That spirit is alive and well at Rapid City’s VFW Post 1273, now entering its fourth year of the Native Toy Drive.

At the center of this mission is Ken Zuniga, whose tireless efforts have brought toys and cheer to Native youth on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The drive has not been without challenges—one year, many of the donated toys were stolen. Yet Zuniga’s response revealed the depth of his compassion. “Even though this happened, if those individuals would come forward we would still help them with toys,” he said. “This is what Christmas is all about—forgiveness to our fellow man, regardless of the circumstances, just as Christ himself would do.”

This year’s Toy Drive honors the memory of Clifford Black Elk Sr. of Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Distribution will take place Monday, December 22, at the Pine Ridge CAP Office. Children will be welcomed by none other than Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, ready to pose for photos and spread holiday cheer. To receive gifts, kids must be present—and while they wait, families can enjoy a warm meal of Sloppy Joes.

The magic of the day is found in the glow of children’s faces as they unwrap their gifts, in the laughter echoing through the room, and in the simple truth that communities are strongest when they come together. This is Christmas: generosity, forgiveness, and joy shared without measure.
