Donors encouraged to give blood in support of Mothers this May

RAPID CITY – Vitalant is partnering with women’s health advocates, Monument Health, and the community to honor and support women who have experienced pregnancy-related complications through the month-long “Donate for Mothers” campaign this May. Blood transfusions help patients in need and are especially critical for women who experience emergencies during pregnancy.

On Friday May 13th, Monument Health will host their May Blood drive from 9 AM – 2 PM in Room S2165, donors are encouraged to make an appointment and donate on behalf of mothers.

Multiple blood and plasma transfusions helped save Nicole Hall’s life when she experienced an amniotic fluid embolism while giving birth to her third child, Haxton. “I wish I could tell my donors that I am grateful for their donation because it not only saved my life, it gave me a chance to meet my son and helped make sure my children didn’t grow up without a mom,” Hall said.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for blood has continued for childbirth as well as pregnancy-related issues. It’s the blood already on the shelf that helps in an emergency, and that’s why it’s crucial to always maintain a safe and ready supply.

“We are honored to work with the advocates and hospital partners behind Donate for Mothers each year to support and recognize the brave women and their loved ones impacted by pregnancy-related complications,” said Vitalant Mountain Division Vice President Anne Burtchaell. “We want to encourage the community to give blood regularly to make sure patients, including mothers, get the lifesaving donations they depend on.”

If donors can’t make it to the Monument Health blood drive, they can pledge to give in support of a mother in their life through Vitalant’s Virtual Blood Drive option. Donors can find a complete list of drives, learn more and make an appointment to give at: www.vitalant.org/donateformothers.

For a limited time, Vitalant is testing all donations for COVID-19 antibodies to produce plasma that could help COVID-19 patients with weakened immune systems.
