Frank Star Comes Out wins OST Presidency

With the majority of precincts reporting in South Dakota the final vote tally is in, Governor Kristi Noem won with 63% of the votes to defeat Democratic Jamie Smith who garnered 35 %, with Libertarian Tracy Quint receiving 3%.

Senator John Thune defeated John Bengs 63% to 26%. House of Representative Dusty Johnson won with 77% to Collin Duprel’s 22% of the vote.

Two measures were on the ballot, Constitutional Amendment D which would expand Medicaid and Initiated Measure 27 which would have legalized recreational marijuana.

With more than 99% of precincts reporting Constitutional Amendment D, passed with 56.2% of the vote compared to 43.8% against. The “yes” vote led when results were first reported shortly after 8 p.m.

Amendment D will amend the South Dakota Constitution to expand Medicaid eligibility to help provide medical coverage for low-income people in designated categories.

Dave Kapaska, DO, MBA, retired hospital executive and co-chair of the American Heart Association’s volunteer cabinet for Medicaid expansion. “We’re glad that South Dakota voters saw that helping our neighbors get health care is the right thing to do. Ensuring health care access for 42,000 hardworking South Dakotans is good for them and their families, good for their employers who need them more than ever, and good for the economic progress of this state.”

The voters of South Dakota decided not to approve Initiated Measure 27 on Tuesday. The measure failed by a vote of 47% ‘Yes’ to 53% ‘No’.

The unofficial results are in for the Oglala Sioux Tribal election. Newcomer Frank Star Comes Out (1946 votes) has defeated Kevin Killer (1415 votes) for the presidency of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
