Great Plains Indian Trading Invests in Small Town North Dakota

Economic development and entrepreneurship enhances the well-being and quality of life in small town America. This transaction offers a positive model and will inspire future development on New Town’s main street, increasing vibrancy, imaginativeness, revitalization, local banking investment, tribal investment, entrepreneurship, and government support- all hallmarks of Governor Burgum’s Main Street initiative.

Small towns in North Dakota require local business commitment and investment to increase social and economic development.  The acquisition of the 9,000 square foot brick and mortar facility underscores our commitment to strengthen and grow our business and community impact, not only on the Ft. Berthold Indian reservation but throughout Indian country.

Indian Owned and Operated

Great Plains Indian Trading is 100% Indian owned and operated.  Ryan Wilson is an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He and his six children are part of a special genre of Indian Trading posts, of which less than 3% nationwide are owned by Individual tribal citizens. To the detriment of opportunity, fairness and tribal self-reliance the Indian since contact has been driven out of the Indian trade market, a market created by the Indian. The economic needs of the people producing Indian Art has since contact been subordinate to the interests of forces outside of tribal communities, fostering a climate of exploitation. These non-Indian traders retain intergenerational transmission of wealth to the economic exclusion of the very communities they trade in.  This dark legacy is meeting a spirited challenge by Great Plains Indian Trading.
