Tuesday, Governor Kristi Noem elected to replace the impeached Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg with a familiar face. She selected Pennington County’s State’s Attorney Mark Vargo to replace him. Vargo has more than 30 years of experience in the legal fields, in both public and professional levels. Vargo had just come off a case against Ravnsborg. Noem would go on to say, “Mark Vargo returns integrity, experience and stability to the Attorney General’s office. He is an outstanding prosecutor who has the respect of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors statewide. Mark will provide the leadership the office needs until the next Attorney General is elected in November and takes office in January.

The Republican Party nominated former AG Marty Jackley for the nomination, voted on last week over David Natvig, the current state Division of Criminal Investigation director.

Vargo takes over for Charles McGuigan, the chief deputy attorney general who had been serving as the AG since the Ravnsborg impeachment.

Ravsnborg would attend Monday’s Government Accountability Board meeting and spoke to the board about two ethics complaints against Noem. “I believe these are legitimate and I think the actions of the Government Accountability Board show they’re legitimate,” Ravnsborg said. “All other complaints the GAB has ever received have been dismissed very quickly in the process and that these have made those couple of hurdles and are showing that we’re acting in good faith.”
