Northern Cheyenne President to face hearing for gross neglect charges

Donna Fisher, Tribal President

LAME DEER, Mont. – The Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council, Lame Deer, MT received a complaint against Donna Fisher, Tribal President on January 19, 2022. The complaint was filed by Serena Wetherwelt, Vice-President, Northern Cheyenne Tribe.  The complaint requests a formal hearing (to be heard on by the Tribal Council) on the charges of gross neglect (Article VII, Section 2 of the Tribe’s constitution) and failure to discharge the duties and exercise the power of office in good faith and in a manner which the Tribal Council believes will best serve the interest of the Tribe (Article VIII, Code of Ethics, Section 2)”.

Article VII Section 11 of the Northern Cheyenne constitution states “Any officer or councilman who shall fail to perform the duties to him or her shall be guilty of gross neglect may be removed by a two thirds (2/3) vote of the Tribal Council after affording the accused member a fair opportunity to be heard in his own defense.  The decision of the Tribal Council shall be final.” Therefore, a hearing has been scheduled, to hear the complaint and response of the President, for Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in the Tribal Chambers, Lame Deer, Montana.

The hearing will be broadcast on the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Community Broadcasting Network.

The complaint has been posted on social media by others outside the Council and Administration.  It is unfortunate that this occurred.  This is a reminder that there is a process for Removal hearings and the Tribal Council is moving forward to afford both the complainant and the accused a fair hearing.
