South Dakota Urban Indian Health to move from Abbey Road clinic location

PIERRE – Most Pierre-area residents are familiar with South Dakota Urban Indian Health’s (SDUIH) Abbey Road clinic location. SDUIH has been located at 1714 Abbey Road for almost 20 years, first opening its doors at that location in 2005. Now, after 44 years of caring for Urban Natives in South Dakota, SDUIH is returning to its roots in downtown Pierre, to accommodate a growing number of patients and needs for cultural activities.

“This is an exciting and necessary change for us,” said Bonnie Cromwell, Chief Administrative Officer for SDUIH. “In 1977 the clinic was started as a referral service, only beginning to treat medical patient’s onsite in 1980. Our first location was at 331 ½ S Pierre Street. Now, decades later, we’re coming full circle and returning to downtown Pierre.”

The new clinic will be located at 339 S Pierre St, and offers more than twice the space of the clinic’s current location on Abbey Road. Plans for the renovation include building out the basement with offices and behavioral health patient space, and adding a third floor for a staff break room. Renovations of the downtown space will begin in late October, with a completion date expected in mid-2022. Midwest Construction is managing the project.

“The timing of our move could not have been more opportune,” said Michaela Seiber, Chief Executive Officer for SDUIH. “The behavioral health needs of our patients have increased substantially during the pandemic. Appointments scheduled with our behavioral health team have tripled in the last year. Moving to a larger space will allow us to accommodate more patients and step up to meet the needs of the Pierre-area Native community.”

Some impacts to clinic operations are expected during renovations between January and April. Patients will receive communication from the clinic prior to any changes in care delivery via written and verbal communication from staff. South Dakota Urban Indian Health is a Federally Qualified Health Center and Urban Indian Health site. SDUIH’s doors are open to anyone in the community, regardless of race, insurance status or ability to pay. Care provided is not limited to medical needs; SDUIH provides holistic quality care for the entire family. Physical and mental healthcare are essential for a healthy society.
